About PhilMur

Who is PhilMur, the blogger?

‘PhilMur’ is short for Phil Murray.  Not all that catchy, I know, but the domain name was available, and we all need a moniker of some sorts out there on the web, right?

I am an individual who loves business, news, and technology — and I am passionate about reasonable, prudent decision-making when it comes to personal financial management.  I love passing on best practices and important information to others.

My wife and I live with our young son in sunny Austin, TX.

I have just over a decade of hands-on work experience in business, with roles in project management, accounting, and ultimately executive leadership through the CFO seat the last few years of my last company.  My industry experience includes a unique mix of white and blue collar industry, with involvement in a start-up ISP in the mid-90′s, a freelance web design background, and extensive involvement in the construction subcontracting industry. I hold a B.S. in Business Administration and an MBA (Finance emphasis) from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Additionally, I am a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Note that I am in no way dispensing information on this blog in an attempt to inform the public of accounting principles or guidelines in the role of a CPA, but rather this blog is a collection of my opinions and knowledge on a variety of topics.  Individuals should always consult licensed, experienced advisors that they hire to address their particular needs and circumstances.

My “Day Job”

Currently, I serve as Director of Finance & Operations for a dot-com startup in early stages based out of Austin called StrictlyExecs.  It provides a unique approach to the executive job market, as it is the first confidential, exclusive, executive-level talent network.  Executives create a profile and confidentially monitor positions coming onto the market that the system matches to them, anonymously inquiring about matched positions as they wish.  For employers, it is an extremely low-cost way to make qualified talent aware of opportunities, while avoiding inundation by hundreds of candidates.  Visit the site at www.StrictlyExecs.com.

    Phil,

Maybe you could give some guidance in rolling funds from 401k into a Roth and paying the tax now. What would be an approximate break even point in number of years to make it worth while? I’m thinking of doing at least some currently in 28% tax rate.

    Thanks for your help. Chuck
