About PhilMur

Who is PhilMur, the blogger?

‘PhilMur’ is short for Phil Murray.  Not all that catchy, I know, but the domain name was available, and we all need a moniker of some sorts out there on the web, right?

I am an individual who loves business, news, financial management, and technology — and I am passionate about reasonable, prudent decision-making when it comes to personal financial management.  I love passing on best practices and important information to others.

My wife and I live with our two young boys in sunny Austin, TX.

I have just over a decade of hands-on work experience in business, with roles in project management, accounting, and ultimately executive leadership through the CFO seat for several years in North Carolina.  My industry experience includes a unique mix of white and blue collar industry, with involvement in a start-up ISP in the mid-90′s, a freelance web design background, and extensive involvement in the construction subcontracting/services industry.

Upon my move to Austin in 2009 I joined a dot-com start-up, StrictlyTalent / StrictlyExecs.   [QUICK PLUG:  StrictlyExecs provides a unique approach to the executive job market, as it is the first confidential, exclusive, executive-level talent network.  Executives create a profile and confidentially monitor positions coming onto the market that the system matches to them, anonymously inquiring about matched positions as they wish.  For employers, it is an extremely low-cost way to make qualified talent aware of opportunities, while avoiding inundation by hundreds of candidates.  While I no longer work with the company, I remain strongly convinced of the value of the solution, and momentum is building in the market around the service.]

Currently I am employed as Controller for Tutors with Computers, a company that provides virtual tutoring services to middle-schoolers and high-schoolers in Title I schools.  It’s a very interesting role and a very interesting company that is doing a lot of good not only in its industry but in the world of education and literacy as a whole.

I hold a B.S. in Business Administration and an MBA (Finance emphasis) both from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Additionally, I am a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), licensed in the state of Texas.

Note that I am in no way dispensing information on this blog in an attempt to inform the public of accounting principles or guidelines in the role of a CPA, but rather this blog is a collection of my opinions and knowledge on a variety of topics.  Individuals should always consult licensed, experienced advisors that they hire to address their particular needs and circumstances.

    Phil,

Maybe you could give some guidance in rolling funds from 401k into a Roth and paying the tax now. What would be an approximate break even point in number of years to make it worth while? I’m thinking of doing at least some currently in 28% tax rate.

    Thanks for your help. Chuck
